DINING: THE STABLES BAR & GRILL
The Stables Restaurant, an award-winning establishment set within a 17th Century Farmhouse, offers sophisticated gastropub dining. The talented chefs craft seasonal menus using locally sourced prime ingredients. The menu showcases refined dishes with a commitment to quality extends to its carefully selected wines, local ales, and premium spirits.
While waiting for our table, we sampled the whipped goat cheese – a delightful composition that paired the creamy cheese with sweet honey and crunchy pecans, all served atop perfectly crisp thyme crostini.
Our starters proved equally accomplished. The French onion soup demonstrated an elevation of classic dishes, with the addition of tender braised beef shin adding remarkable depth, while the Gruyere cheese croute provided the perfect finishing touch. The ‘Stable’s’ interpretation of a prawn cocktail showed particular innovation – we found the addition of avocado brought a contemporary richness, while the Bloody Mary sorbet offered an unexpected and refreshing twist. The melba toast provided a satisfying crunch to complete the dish.
For main courses, we selected the English beef fillet, which arrived perfectly pink as promised. The marrowbone crust added a rich, savoury element that complemented the tender meat beautifully. The accompaniments showed equal care – confit potato and smoked pancetta provided robust flavours, while the mushroom bourguignonne sauce brought everything together harmoniously. Our second main of seared cod loin demonstrated the kitchen’s versatility with seafood. The lemon Pink Fir potatoes provided a light, citrusy base, while the addition of king prawns elevated the dish. The sautéed chard and white wine dill sauce completed this refined plate.
We concluded our meal with two classic desserts, each expertly executed. The sticky toffee and date pudding achieved the perfect balance of sweetness, with the butterscotch sauce, crunchy brandy snap, and vanilla ice cream creating a delightful contrast of temperatures and textures. The triple chocolate brownie proved equally impressive, accompanied by chocolate soil and a classic vanilla ice cream that cut through the richness perfectly.
