The Ruby Group has expanded its Italian portfolio with Ruby Giulia, a property that reimagines a 5,300-square-metre former Ministry of the Interior building on Via Agostino Depretis. Under the direction of CEO and founder Michael Struck, the company has created a hotel that balances a luxurious contemporary design with the character of its surroundings, establishing itself in one of Rome’s most authentic quarters.
The location places guests within walking distance of the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Termini Station, whilst Fiumicino Airport sits 35 minutes away. The Monti district itself defines the property’s character. Cobbled streets wind past artisan workshops, independent boutiques, and traditional osterias, creating an atmosphere that feels distinctly Roman.

As Ruby’s second Italian hotel, following Ruby Bea in Florence, Giulia brings a design-first approach to a city where classical grandeur often sets the tone. Instead, the hotel focuses on atmosphere, comfort and a lighter, more contemporary expression of luxury.
Inspired Interiors with a Cinematic Touch
The interiors draw subtle inspiration from 1970s spy films, a nod to the building’s former life in the Ministry of the Interior. A palette of deep emerald, burnt orange, and rich red feels warm and confident, complemented by terrazzo, brass, and velvet that add texture and depth. Hints of Fellini and Italian cinema inspire the design, shaping spaces through colour and composition.

Vintage furnishings sit effortlessly alongside contemporary pieces, giving each space a sense of lived-in character. In the lounges areas feel simultaneously part of the hotel and part of the neighbourhood, where guests and locals might meet over coffee, cocktails, or conversation. The overall effect is sophisticated, intentional, and quietly cinematic.
Thoughtful Rooms, Designed for Comfort
The 164 rooms span four categories, including Cosy, Lovely, Wow and Loft, ranging from 17 to 31 square metres. Ruby has stripped away the excess, focusing entirely on what actually matters during a stay. Signature features include high-quality beds, rainfall showers, blackout curtains and adjustable lighting that shifts from fresh morning brightness to softer evening tones.

Couples, solo travellers and business guests will find well-considered spaces designed for rest and efficiency, while the Loft category offers additional living room for those who prefer it. Ruby describes this philosophy as “Lean Luxury”, focusing on what genuinely improves the guest experience.
Connected to Monti
Ruby Giulia is designed to sit naturally within Monti’s local rhythm. The 24-hour bar and café serve as social spaces for guests and residents, be it an espresso in the morning or apperitivo as the day slows.

The rooftop terrace offers something Rome doesn’t give up easily, elevated views without the tourist crowds. Terracotta rooflines stretch in every direction, punctuated by church domes and the occasional palm tree rising above the skyline.

The surrounding streets maintain an authentic character increasingly difficult to find in central Rome. Creative studios, independent bookshops, and vintage clothing stores operate alongside traditional businesses, creating a district with genuine local life rather than one entirely oriented toward visitors. This connection allows Ruby Giulia to offer an authentic experience that can’t be replicated.
Expanding Reach, Maintaining Character
Ruby Hotels joined IHG Hotels & Resorts in early 2025, bringing its design-focused properties into a wider global network and connecting guests to the IHG One Rewards programme. Founded in 2013, Ruby operates with a deliberately lean structure, focusing on design, location, and guest-facing services. Backed by established European family offices and private investors, the brand continues to expand across key cities.
The partnership means easier booking and loyalty rewards for travellers without compromising the carefully curated design and character that set Ruby hotels apart. Even within a larger portfolio, Ruby properties remain distinct visually, operationally, and experientially, while benefiting from the scale and systems of a global network.
Modern Luxury in the Heart of the City
Guests can arrive casually, order a drink at the bar, and feel immediately at ease. Monti is truly the key to this experience, as it’s close enough to major landmarks for convenience, yet alive with everyday life.
For those drawn to classical opulence, Rome offers countless choices. For travellers seeking modern design, neighbourhood authenticity, and spaces that feel connected to real life rather than curated spectacle, Ruby Giulia presents a quiet, stylish alternative to contemporary luxury.
