Durham University has announced the appointment of Professor Kieran Fernandes as Executive Dean of its Faculty of Business, marking a significant leadership transition for one of the United Kingdom’s foremost business schools. Professor Fernandes, who brings more than two decades of academic and strategic leadership experience, will assume the position in April 2025.
The appointment represents a strategic move for Durham University, as Professor Fernandes steps into a crucial role on the University Executive Committee. His responsibilities will encompass delivering the University Strategy for the Faculty of Business, with particular emphasis on the strategic development and financial stewardship of the Business School.
Professor Fernandes’ trajectory within Durham University exemplifies a commitment to academic excellence and institutional growth. Since joining the institution in 2013 as Head of Department of the Business School, he has demonstrated remarkable leadership capabilities across various senior positions. His current role as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Development & Engagement builds upon previous positions, including Associate Dean (Faculty) for Internationalisation and Executive Dean (Interim).
Professor Fernandes’ expertise spans operations management, innovation diffusion, and complex systems. His academic journey includes positions at the Universities of Warwick and York, establishing a robust foundation in British higher education. Recognition of his scholarly contributions is evident through his Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Wolfson Research Institute.
Professor Fernandes’ influence extends beyond academia into the realm of economic development and innovation. As the Executive Director of the Northern East LEP Innovation Observatory, he has played a pivotal role in advancing regional economic initiatives. His appointment to the Academic Advisory Council of the Chartered Management Institute further underscores his standing within the business education community.
