Transformational Leadership at the Helm

Salesforce has announced a significant leadership change that will shape its future trajectory. Robin Washington will assume the newly created position of President and Chief Operating and Financial Officer (COFO) from March 21, 2025. The appointment comes at a crucial juncture as the company accelerates its vision of transforming businesses through AI-powered solutions.

Washington’s impressive track record spans several decades at the forefront of financial and operational strategy. Her extensive experience includes executive roles at Gilead Sciences, Hyperion, and PeopleSoft, complemented by her current board positions at prominent organisations such as Alphabet, Eikon Therapeutics, Honeywell International, and Vertiv Holdings.

Strategic vision meets operational excellence

The creation of this consolidated leadership role reflects Salesforce’s strategic focus on profitable growth and operational superiority. Washington’s appointment builds upon her substantial contribution to the company’s development, having served on its board since 2013 and as Lead Independent Director since 2022.

Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, emphasised the significance of this appointment: “Robin has been a trusted partner, advisor, and a key architect of our strategy as we accelerate the rise of Agentforce — the first digital labor platform.” Her deep understanding of both operational complexities and financial strategy positions her uniquely to guide the organisation through its next phase of growth.

Pioneering the agent-first era

Washington’s leadership arrives during a transformative period for business technology. The advancement of AI agents fundamentally alters how organisations operate, innovate, and expand their capabilities. Her expertise will prove crucial in steering Salesforce’s development of Agentforce, their groundbreaking digital labour platform.

The new COFO expressed her perspective on the role: “Having worked closely with Marc and the executive team for over a decade, I couldn’t be more excited to help lead Salesforce and our global community of employees, customers, and Trailblazers into this agent-first era that will fundamentally change how businesses operate, innovate, and grow.”

Leadership transition and continuity

The appointment coincides with significant changes in Salesforce’s executive team. Brian Millham, following an impressive 25-year tenure, will retire on May 1, 2025, transitioning to an advisory position. His contributions have been fundamental to Salesforce’s success, from establishing their renowned sales organisation to developing their customer success operations.

Additionally, Arnold Donald will assume the position of Lead Independent Director after Washington’s transition to her executive role. Amy Weaver, who currently serves as CFO, will complete her previously announced transition from the company.

Professional background and expertise

Washington’s professional journey showcases her capability to lead complex organisations through periods of significant growth. Her previous role as Executive Vice President and CFO at Gilead Sciences from 2008 to 2019 demonstrated her ability to manage substantial financial operations. Earlier positions as CFO of Hyperion Solutions and Chief Accounting Officer at PeopleSoft further underscore her comprehensive understanding of technology sector dynamics.

Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University. This combination of educational background and practical experience provides a robust foundation for leading Salesforce’s strategic initiatives.
