Fenwick, the iconic Newcastle-based luxury retailer, is poised to enter a new era of growth and innovation with the appointment of Nigel Blow as its new Chief Executive Officer. Nigel Blow, who currently holds the position of CEO at the Morleys department store chain, will officially assume his role at Fenwick in October. His arrival follows the departure of John Edgar, who led the company through a transformative four and a half years, including the challenging period of the Covid-19 pandemic. Edgar’s tenure at Fenwick was marked by a series of strategic investments and expansions, which have helped the retailer differentiate itself from its competitors.

Under John Edgar’s leadership, Fenwick navigated the complexities of the pandemic, launching a robust online platform that complemented its traditional in-store experience. Edgar’s vision extended to enhancing and expanding the retailer’s restaurant business, as well as spearheading key development projects across its portfolio of stores. Notably, he oversaw the masterplan project in Newcastle and significant improvements to the Kingston store. These initiatives have positioned Fenwick as a forward-thinking player in the luxury retail sector, committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience.

Sian Westerman, Chair of Fenwick, acknowledged Edgar’s contributions, stating, “John Edgar is stepping down as CEO of Fenwick as part of a reorganisation of our executive leadership team and wider changes to the management structure of the company. Over the past 4.5 years, John has successfully steered the business through the Covid-19 pandemic, launched our online proposition, enhanced and expanded our restaurant business, focused on the development of key stores, including a masterplan project in Newcastle and significant improvements to the Kingston store. We appreciate John’s contribution to the business and wish him every success for the future.”

Edgar’s departure comes at a time when Fenwick is undergoing significant transformation. Last year, the company made the decision to sell its London Bond Street store, which had been a part of the Fenwick portfolio for 131 years. The building was sold to developers for a guide price of £430 million, with the proceeds being reinvested in the Tyneside site and the company’s digital strategy. This bold move reflects Fenwick’s commitment to adapting to the changing retail environment while maintaining its strong heritage.

Nigel Blow’s appointment as CEO is seen as a continuation of this transformative journey. With a wealth of experience in the retail sector, including his current role at Morleys, Blow is well-equipped to lead Fenwick into its next phase of growth. His expertise in managing and growing department store chains is expected to be invaluable as Fenwick continues to innovate and expand its offerings.

Despite these changes, Fenwick has reassured its loyal customers that its beloved Christmas window display, a tradition cherished by generations, will remain an integral part of the store’s festive offerings.

Fenwick’s recent expansions have also extended to its restaurant business, which has seen fruitful collaborations with renowned partners. These include a successful partnership with Greggs and an ongoing collaboration with the Michelin-starred Northumberland restaurant Hjem.
