Formula 1 and Lenovo have confirmed the extension of their partnership, set to elevate Lenovo’s role to that of a Global Partner starting from 2025. This development marks a new chapter in the collaboration between two global leaders in their respective fields—Formula 1 in motorsports and Lenovo in advanced technology solutions. Additionally, Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo, will assume the title of Global Smartphone Partner for F1, a move that further deepens Lenovo’s presence in the sport.
Under this multi-year agreement, Lenovo will be entrusted with providing cutting-edge technology, devices, and services crucial to the seamless delivery of Grands Prix, both at the track and remotely. Notably, Lenovo’s involvement will extend to title sponsorship for two races each season, and both Lenovo and Motorola will benefit from enhanced trackside branding visibility, cementing their presence within the fast-paced and ever-growing F1 ecosystem.
“I am delighted that Lenovo will become a Global Partner of Formula 1. Since joining the sport Lenovo’s creativity and passion for technology and innovation have supported F1’s ambitions to create more once-in-a-lifetime moments for fans. Today marks a new chapter in a partnership that will only continue to grow from strength to strength. I look forward to continuing our work with Lenovo and using our shared commitment to precision, innovation, and sustainability to ensure F1 remains the world’s most technologically advanced sport for years to come.”
Stefano Domenicali, CEO and President of Formula 1
Since 2022, Lenovo’s technology has played an essential role in the operations of Formula 1 as an Official Partner. By providing on-site High-Performance Computing (HPC) solutions, servers, and edge devices, Lenovo has significantly contributed to enhancing F1’s world-class broadcast product. These resources enable Formula 1 to bring the thrill of racing to millions of fans worldwide, showcasing the sport’s intricate blend of high-speed competition and technological sophistication. Lenovo’s hardware portfolio, including laptops, workstations, and Motorola smartphones, ensures that F1 staff have the necessary tools to deliver highly engaging and personalised content for its dedicated fanbase.
The renewal of this partnership is not only a testament to Lenovo’s commitment to innovation but also underscores a shared dedication to sustainability. A core element of Lenovo’s collaboration with F1 includes its Asset Recovery Service, which supports the sport’s broader sustainability goals, including the objective to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030. Through this service, Lenovo assists in the responsible recycling of retired computing hardware, helping Formula 1 dispose of 95% of obsolete equipment in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. This not only reduces operational costs but also mitigates potential security risks by ensuring secure data destruction.
A highlight of the partnership has been Lenovo’s dedication to integrating smarter technology into the F1 experience, exemplified by the world’s first kiss-activated trophies introduced during the FORMULA 1 LENOVO JAPANESE GRAND PRIX 2023 and the FORMULA 1 LENOVO UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX 2023. These innovations, along with the laurel wreath design incorporated into the podium celebrations, demonstrate Lenovo’s ability to combine tradition with cutting-edge technology, enriching the spectacle for fans and participants alike.
“We are thrilled to elevate our partnership to the next level becoming a Global Partner of Formula 1. Our vision at Lenovo is to harness the power of AI to create a smarter, more inclusive, and sustainable world, accessible to everyone. Through our groundbreaking partnerships, like the one with Formula 1, we are pushing the boundaries of innovation and performance. Together, we’re not just shaping the future of technology and motorsport, but we’re also ensuring that cutting-edge technological advancements benefit all, creating unforgettable experiences no matter where they are in the world.”
Yang Yuanqing, Chairman & CEO of Lenovo
The renewed collaboration also paves the way for new explorations in next-generation technologies. Lenovo’s work with F1 has already yielded significant advancements in the application of AI, edge computing, and AR/VR solutions. These technologies have the potential to revolutionise not only how the sport is presented but also how it is managed behind the scenes. By leveraging AI-enabled PCs and smartphones, as well as advanced AR/VR capabilities, Formula 1 and Lenovo are jointly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, both in terms of fan engagement and operational efficiency.
In recent years, Formula 1 has experienced unprecedented growth, with record-breaking television audiences, increased attendance at races, and a surge in fan interaction across various platforms. As the sport continues to expand, the synergy between F1 and Lenovo will prove crucial in meeting the demands of an ever-growing global audience. The partnership’s emphasis on sustainability and future technologies positions both companies as leaders in their respective domains, reinforcing their shared vision for innovation and progress.
Through close collaboration between Formula 1’s technical teams and Lenovo’s Centres of Excellence, solutions are being developed to tackle a range of complex challenges. One notable area is the integration of on-site and edge computing AI solutions to enhance the efficiency of live broadcasts, further solidifying the technological backbone of F1’s global presence. Together, F1 and Lenovo are poised to continue building on their successful collaboration, laying the foundation for the future of motorsport and beyond.
