The menu at The Medina Restaurant is an eclectic collection of gastronomy inspired by tradition. There is a carefully considered balance between each dish, where it be from the land or the sea, all of which are harmonised with the earthy richness of local produce. Here you will find robust flavours, aromatic herbs and succulent textures. Influences from around the Mediterranean are clear, but the underpinning is traditional Arabic cuisine with a modern twist.
We are greeted by Pierre, a knowledgable and charming French waiter, who just happened to be a keen enthusiast of modern mixology. He treated us to some speciality cocktails to set the tone, so be sure to indulge in one (or two) of the bars unique creations.
To start, the Sweet Red Prawn Carpaccio is as pretty as it is tasty. With local red prawns smashed to a thin slither, topped with pink grapefruit, pink peppercorns and pickled shallots, it’s a delicate masterpiece that perfectly sets the tone. Unexpectedly refreshing, and ubiquitously delicious. For a more casual bite, the Fritto Misto offers a generous portion of lightly battered Mediterranean fish, shellfish and harissa.
For the mains, it would be almost an insult to the chef not to opt for the Catch of The Day. This time we are treated to a magnificent Sea Bream – a local staple. Served whole, your waiter prepares the dish at your table, meticulously and skilfully deboning the generously sized fish. Sympathetically prepared and cooked to perfection, the steaming white meat flakes away, and the accompanying whole roasted, smoked aubergine and lemon verbena provides a perfect accompaniment to the hearty dish. If a vegan option is your preference, the Grilled Halloumi is an excellent choice. Drizzled in warm honey and nestled amongst a bed of fresh zucchini, crisp coriander salad and homemade hummus, its a well portioned dish with a homely but modern feel.
With little room for dessert, our temptations were overruled by the delectable section. The Rose Water & Cardamom Brûlée and the Maltese Ricotta Cannoli were the clear winners. Freshly prepared, and again a modern twist on traditional dishes inspired by the various cultural influences on Malta.
