HSBC has announced the appointment of Georges Elhedery as the Group Chief Executive, effective 2 September 2024. This significant leadership transition follows an extensive and thorough selection process, which evaluated both internal and external candidates.

Group Chairman Sir Mark Tucker expressed his enthusiasm about the appointment, stating, “I am delighted to confirm Georges as the next HSBC Group Chief Executive. He is an exceptional leader and banker who demonstrates a profound commitment to the Bank, our clients, and our employees. His proven track record in navigating change, driving growth, simplifying operations, and managing costs underscores his suitability for this pivotal role. Georges’ strong focus on execution will be crucial as we continue to advance our strategic objectives.”

Elhedery’s career trajectory spans nearly three decades in the financial services sector, marked by prominent roles across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. His recent tenure as Group Chief Financial Officer, which began in early 2023, has showcased his strategic acumen and broad international perspective. The Board of HSBC has recognised his capacity for visionary leadership and deep global insight, which played a key role in his selection.

Sir Mark Tucker further noted, “Throughout his time with HSBC, Georges has demonstrated exceptional strategic insight and a visionary approach, coupled with a comprehensive understanding of international markets. The Board unanimously concluded that Georges is the outstanding candidate to lead HSBC into its next phase of development and growth.”

Georges Elhedery joined HSBC in 2005 and has held various high-profile international positions over his distinguished career. He will succeed Noel Quinn, who will retire on 2 September 2024. To ensure a seamless transition, Elhedery and Quinn will collaborate closely to facilitate an orderly transfer of responsibilities.
