Paris runways make the case for shoulder-grazing earrings

From the Paris collections for spring and summer 2027, one jewellery direction has drawn particular attention: the elongated drop earring, worn from the lobe to the collarbone, the shoulder and beyond. The Executive Magazine looks at how Dior, Chanel, Chloé and Balenciaga each interpreted the long silhouette, and at the centuries-old tradition of girandoles and pendant earrings that the new designs recall. The trend marks a change in emphasis from last season's layered necklaces toward ornament designed to move, catch the light and frame the face.

The Paris collections for spring and summer 2027 have placed a single jewellery silhouette at the centre of attention: the elongated drop earring. Across the week’s shows, models wore earrings that fell from the lobe to the collarbone, the shoulder and, in a few cases, well past the waistline. Proportions of this kind turned a familiar form of adornment into a defining jewellery story of the season.

The direction marks a shift in emphasis from the beaded strands and corded necklaces that carried the previous season. Decoration has moved back to the ear, with designers extending the earring line until it meets the neckline, the shoulder or a matching jewel resting against the chest. The result is jewellery built around movement, light and length.

The long earring across the Paris collections

Dior and Chanel

At Dior, earrings formed of flower petals, recalling the maison’s celebrated Junon dress, fell as far as the waist. Pearlescent drops suspended from fine gold chains settled against the collarbone, joining matching necklaces so that earring and neck jewel read as one continuous line.

Chanel, shown under Matthieu Blazy, presented clusters of pearls that lengthened into fine strands. The earring was no longer an accent but a structural part of each look, drawing the eye from ear to shoulder with every step.

Chloé, Balenciaga and Polo Ralph Lauren

Chloé offered sweeping hoops and earrings finished with floral fringe that grazed the collarbone. At Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli carried the theme to exaggerated lengths, showing gold chain earrings that reached well below the belt. Polo Ralph Lauren gave the trend a more relaxed reading, with seashell earrings that swayed with the movement of the clothes.

Read together, the collections point to a shared view: after seasons of layered necklines, the ear is the season’s principal canvas.

A silhouette with centuries of history

The appetite for long earrings is far from new. Elaborate girandoles and pendeloques were popular at the height of European aristocracy, their tiers of gemstones arranged to catch candlelight at dinner. Portrait records show the fashion across the centuries. An 1826 painting of Countess Anna Mária Barkóczy by János Rombauer pairs chandelier earrings with multiple strands of pearls, while a 1754 portrait of Elizabeth Stuart shows asymmetric pearl earrings carrying a braid of hair understood to belong to her husband, Frederick V.

The Paris designers have revived that spirit of grandeur and recast it in contemporary proportions. Where the historic pieces relied on precious stones alone, the new earrings draw their effect from scale, weight and the play of chains, petals and pearls against the fabric of the clothes.

What the trend signals for the season ahead

The appearance of one silhouette across several of the week’s largest houses suggests a settled direction for the months ahead. Jewellery houses and high-street designers alike tend to follow the line set at this stage of the calendar, and the spring 2027 collections have given them a clear brief.

The long earring also answers a practical question of styling, framing the face and elongating the neckline without adding volume at the wrist or hand. As the collections move from runway to jewellers’ displays next year, the shoulder-grazing earring looks set to lead spring and summer jewellery.
