TransPennine Express (TPE) is entering a new chapter in its financial leadership with the appointment of Fiona Roberts as finance director. A Manchester native from Boothstown, Fiona brings both a hands-on understanding of the rail industry and a reputation for transforming complex financial operations.
Fiona’s journey through the sector is notable. At Network Rail, she spent six years navigating the intricate dynamics of Britain’s railways, including three years as a financial controller. More recently, she led a multi-year programme at TalkTalk Group, upgrading systems, streamlining processes, and strengthening reporting, efforts that guided the company through a period of substantial change.
Fiona’s vision extends beyond the balance sheet, as she sees an opportunity to shape the future of the railway as Great British Railways (GBR) comes into focus.Â
“I’m really looking forward to working with the team at TPE, who are forward-thinking and ambitious, and where customer satisfaction is at the heart of everything they do. It’s an exciting time to be part of the business and contribute to its growth.“

TPE’s decision to bring Fiona on board reflects a wider trend in the industry, marrying operational insight with financial strategy. As rail networks evolve, companies like TPE are seeking leaders who can navigate both the operational and fiscal complexities of modern transport, ensuring that ambitious growth plans remain grounded in strong financial stewardship.
With a new director of finance at the helm, TPE signals its commitment to a forward-looking approach, one where finance doesn’t just manage resources but actively shapes the company’s path and customer experience.
