El Fuerte is an iconic property that has become synonymous with luxury in Marbella and, in many ways, helped define the destination itself. Its story began with José Luque Manzano, who left school at fourteen to take over his father’s businesses and quickly showed a natural instinct for trade. In 1954 he bought Doña Elvira’s house, the plot on which the hotel now stands, and in July 1957 the hotel opened its doors with a blessing and a gathering in the gardens beside the sea.

Some of the first guests to visit El Fuerte are some of the most iconic names of their time, including Walt Disney, who stayed during the spring of 1958 and Lola Flores, who also enjoyed extended stays at El Fuerte.

In 2022, the hotel began the largest refurbishment, converting the property into a five-star destination for a new generation of guests.

The Museo del Hotel El Fuerte opened on site in 2002, gathering photographs, publicity material and documents alongside antique switchboards, cash registers and coffee machines that once served the original building. It offers a record of how the hotel grew from a single venture into one of the coast’s most established addresses.

Rooms and suites

The rooms at El Fuerte were designed by Chilean interior designer Jaime Beriestain, who set out to create the perfect balance between a classic Spanish style and a more contemporary design. Most rooms open directly onto the Mediterranean, making full use of the natural light this stretch of the Costa del Sol receives for much of the year. Waking up to that view, with the morning light pouring in through open doors, is reason enough to choose a sea-facing room.

Double rooms with frontal sea views come with their own terrace, positioned to take in some of the most scenic coastline. Step outside in the evening and the view stretches out across the water.

Guests after the most personalised version of a stay can step up into the Selected tier, where the same sea-facing rooms come paired with the dedicated service and luxury amenities that tier brings with it.

Spa by Clarins

The hotel’s spa works in partnership with Clarins, and treatments are built around personalised advice from in-house therapists, alongside a varied menu covering treatments from facials, massages, lymphatic drainage and reflexology, alongside a wider range of beauty treatments.

I opted for the Beauty Sleep treatment, which combines a full body massage with a multi-step facial designed to leave the skin visibly rejuvenated.

From the moment you walk into the spa, it truly does feel like a sanctuary. Each treatment is designed to awaken your senses and restore your wellbeing.

Amentities

Outdoor space at El Fuerte is stunning and the grounds include access to two swimming pools, one of which is reserved for adults only, plus a jacuzzi. Premium sunbeds are available both at the pool and on the beach, which sits close enough to reach within a few minutes on foot.

Several of the hotel’s restaurants spill out onto terraces and outdoor dining areas, including the Levante restaurant and Le Marche for breakfast, giving beautiful alfresco dining experiences.

A stretch of the garden is dedicated to The Champagne House, a terrace positioned next to the San Luis Fort, the old fortification that gave the hotel its name. The space was created in partnership with Taittinger, one of the last great Champagne houses still run by its founding family, and pairs the hotel’s own history with the maison’s long-standing reputation for origin and authenticity. An exclusive menu of carefully selected labels covers everything from a sunset toast to a full evening of celebration, each glass served against the backdrop of the sea and the fort beyond.

Families travelling with children are well catered for through The Olive Club, a supervised activity programme for children aged four to twelve. The programme runs a varied schedule throughout the day, freeing parents to make use of the spa or the pool.

Start the day at Le Marché

Le Marché brings together a wide range of breakfast favourites under one roof, built around a series of stations. The buffet includes a carving counter for freshly cut 5J Iberian ham and a setup for oysters and champagne, alongside a spread of artisanal bread, pastries and patisserie made in-house.

A show cooking station offers omelettes, waffles, crêpes and eggs prepared to order, while a separate counter covers seasonal fruit, smoothies and freshly squeezed juices, with yoghurts, cereals, nuts and jams on hand.

Guests in the Selected category have access to Le Marché Selected, a dedicated à la carte breakfast featuring their take on classic dishes such as Royal Eggs, lobster rolls, 100% butter brioche and Nordic Waffles, as well as their own creations including Muslienoa, puffed quinoa with creamy mascarpone and berries, and the Floral Yoghurt, accompanied by candied figs in agave and a matcha tea sponge cake.

The Art of Breakfast

Breakfast at El Fuerte is no ordinary start to the day. The Art of Breakfast is a unique curated three-step experience by hotel’s chef. The morning begins with Roots, a selection built around cold-pressed juices, natural yoghurts and artisan granolas, alongside seasonal fruit served to keep its natural flavour and texture intact.

From there, Tradition takes over with sourdough bread, artisanal cured meats, artisanal sausages and cheeses chosen for their careful maturation.

The experiences concludes with Loop & Cake, a delightful rotating carousel of mini pastries and homemade sweets designed to bring a little playfulness to the table.

Beach Front Dining at Soleo

Soleo sits on the beach’s edge, with views stretching out across the Mediterranean. Interior designer Isabel López Vilalta, known for her acclaimed designs such as the Celler Can Roca, has created a beautiful space, giving a European, summer aesthetic.

The Soleo menu incorporates Mediterranean cooking with the occasional fusion touch, built around local rice dishes, locally caught fish and seafood alongside lighter options. We began with a tomato salad and prawns pil pil, before moving on to the lamb with chimichurri sauce and a chickpea purée, which arrived tender and full of flavour.

The Estuary sea bass followed, served with baby potatoes. The fish tasted so fresh, eating it within reach of the shoreline, with the salt air drifting in off the water, rounded off the whole experience perfectly. There is something about good seafood eaten this close to the sea that just makes sense.

Dessert was certainly a sweet conclusion. The Apple Pie, Roasted Pumpkin, and Sheep’s Milk Toffee arrived in a music box, revealing layers of apple textures, creamy roasted pumpkin finished with Frigiliana honey, sheep’s milk toffee and a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. The Soleo Pistachio Ferreros, were incredibly indulgent, with pistachio marzipan filled with creamy mascarpone that melted in your mouth.

Dining in Levante

Levante is the kind of restaurant where the evening unfolds beautifully and one course leads into the next. It’s relaxing atmosphere invites it’s guests to settle in and stay a while. Guests can choose from indoor dining or seating out on the terrace overlooking the seafront.

The kitchen, shaped by Inés Calle and Vicente Fortea, draws beautifully on the Andalusian larder, leaning on olive oil, Iberian pork, fruit and vegetables, cereals, nuts and spices, with almadraba tuna a particular point of pride among the seafood. It’s carefully crafted menu is inspired by the Mediterranean Sea, with dishes not only based on the local cuisine but also inspired from dishes around the world.

During our stay, we had the Panang Curry with fresh prawns served with basmati rice and furikake. The coconut base was rich and creamy, cuhioning the zest and spice. Another stand out dish was the Wild Salmon with Teriyaki Sauce.

Qahwa coffee house

Qahwa is the hotel’s own coffee house, built around a blend created exclusively for El Fuerte Marbella. The coffee combines two origins, Colombia and Brazil, sourced from the Santa Bárbara plantations and the Cerrado Mineiro region. The blend was put together by barista Adrián Fernández, who was named Champion of Brewers Spain in 2017 and Spain Barista Champion in 2014.

Also on the menu is a selection of delectable homemade cakes, baked fresh daily using traditional recipes and local produce. The best spot to enjoy is overlooking the sea on the Terraza de Levante.

The Selected Tier

Running through both the rooms and the restaurants is a higher tier of service known as Selected, created for guests wanting the most exclusive version of a stay. At dinner and breakfast, the usual buffet format steps aside for table service and a custom à la carte menu, supported by a tasting breakfast, recommendations from the chef directly and a kitchen working in close view of the dining room. Selected guests also gain access to a private lounge with food and drink available between 11:00 and 21:00.

Selected guests stay in the hotel’s finest rooms, with free hydrotherapy once a day and Molton Brown amenities in the room. Luggage packing and unpacking is taken care of, along with late check-out, so there is no need to watch the clock on the last morning. A welcome drink and transfers to nearby points of interest in Marbella complete the package.

El Fuerte sits directly on the Marbella seafront, with its gardens running down towards the water in the same spot where guests gathered for the hotel’s opening ceremony in 1957. The centre of Marbella is within easy walking distance, putting the old town, its shops and its restaurants in close proximity. For a hotel built around the beach, it does an excellent job of creating the feeling of privacy and seclusion for it’s guests.
